Land Monitoring Service

Link to Copernicus

Copernicus is the European Union's Earth observation and monitoring programme, which analyses the planet and its environment for the benefit of all European citizens. The programme, coordinated and managed by the European Commission, provides information services based on Earth observation data, free of charge, on numerous areas of use, thanks to a wide variety of technologies, ranging from satellites in space to in situ measurement systems on land, at sea and in the air.

It is structured in information capture components (satellite images and In Situ data) from which the Atmospheric Monitoring, Marine Monitoring, Land Monitoring, Climate Change, Security and Emergencies services are obtained.

The Copernicus (Land Monitoring Service), coordinated at the Spanish level by the IGN/CNIG, provides geographic information on land cover, land use and its temporal changes, vegetation status, water cycle and land surface energy variables.

Its potential applications are very diverse, and include land and urban planning, forestry management, water management, agriculture and food security, nature conservation and restoration, rural development, emergency management, etc. The priorities of the service and its relevance for users are defined and validated by the European Commission and Member States.

The Copernicus Land Monitoring service provides a series of global, continental and local products focused on key thematic areas for land knowledge:

  • Land Cover and Land Use mapping
  • Priority area monitoring (i.e. coastal, riparian or environmental protection areas)
  • Bio-physical parameters and their time evolution
  • Ground motion monitoring
  • Satellite data
  • Reference and validation data

IGN and CNIG, as far as Land Cover and Land Use concerned, participate in the analysis, verification and production of the information provided by Copernicus Land Monitoring Service. More information on IGN activities and projects in the framework of the Copernicus project.
