Data model

The SIOSE AR data model describes the objects, attributes, relationships, consistency rules, structure and philosophy of the digital vector geographic data of the Land Occupation Information System in Spain. It is an application schema in the sense defined by 19101 (Geographic Information - Reference Model) and ISO 19109 (Geographic Information - Rules for application schema), a conceptual model for land occupation data.

The particularity of the SIOSE data model is the way of understanding the elements present on the surface and the way of storing information about them. This model follows an object-oriented philosophy, where each type of element in the territory is considered an object capable of presenting information about its characteristics or relationships with other types of elements.

The characteristics of the SIOSE data model are:

  • The working unit is the polygon, the geometric entity of the model. There are two layers of polygons, one for covers and one for uses.
  • Thematic information on land cover and land use is defined in association with the polygons. There is a catalogue of land cover and land use classes.
  • Within each homogeneous land occupation polygon, thematic presences of land cover and land use can be identified, measurable by a percentage value (%).
  • Land covers can be characterised by means of attributes. There is a catalogue of attributes that can be assigned to the classes.
